Parkes and Forbes My Place Program a success

Nearly 200 residents from Parkes and Forbes participated in NSW Fair Trading’s My Place program last week.

The program focused on consumer rights and the responsibilities of real estate agents, motor dealers and repairers.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner, Rod Stowe, was pleased to see so many Parkes and Forbes residents interested to learn more about consumer protection and the business rules that apply to marketplace transactions.

My Place provides an opportunity to engage with local residents and traders,” said Mr Stowe.

“It’s great to see the community is interested in working towards and maintaining a fair marketplace.Of the 10 sessions held, the most popular were dedicated to consumer rights and scams, real estate agents, and motor vehicle dealers and repairers.”

NSW Fair Trading conducted 16 education visits to local retailers and traders. This routine feature of the My Place program reminds traders of their obligations under the Australian Consumer Law and provides them with the opportunity to talk to Fair Trading about the legislation’s application to their business practices.

NSW Fair Trading officers also conducted inspections of 54 licensed local traders.

The real estate industry had the highest level of non-compliance, with all 10 businesses inspected found to be in breach of legislation. These businesses were issued with a total of 13 penalty infringement notices, totalling $17,490. Enquiries are continuing into a potential four further breaches.

NSW Fair Trading inspectors found eight of the 16 inspected motor dealers were non-compliant and a further nine breaches of legislation.

Twenty-six motor vehicle repairers were also inspected, with 14 found to be non-compliant and 18 breaches of legislation detected. Officers also inspected motor repairer tradespersons certificates and found three to be non-compliant.

NSW Fair Trading will be conducting follow-up inspections to ensure non-compliant traders have addressed these areas of concern.
