New whole of Government cleaning contracts awarded

Nine new contracts have been awarded to deliver cleaning services to approximately 4,200 government sites across the State, including schools, TAFE campuses and ambulance, police and fire stations.

The new contracts, awarded under a new $1.7 billion Whole-of-Government Facilities Management (Cleaning Services) Contract, are estimated to save the NSW Government more than $75 million over the near five-year term, and include safeguards to fully protect cleaners’ rights and entitlements.

The contracts also set new social procurement benchmarks to encourage greater participation from Aboriginal and disability employment enterprises and more direct employment opportunities for Aboriginal workers and people with a disability.

Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello said five contractors had been selected to deliver services across nine NSW regions following a detailed, competitive procurement process.

“We’ve been able to achieve a great win-win outcome here – delivering better value for money for the state while also providing certainty of employment for our cleaners,” Mr Dominello said.

“Our Government is building hundreds of new schools and significantly expanding over a dozen TAFE campuses over the next five years.

“This means that demand for cleaning services across schools, TAFEs, courthouses and other government facilities will only continue to grow in coming years.

“I would like to thank United Voice for their advocacy and collaboration with the Government to see this outcome achieved.

“I also want to acknowledge our cleaners, who work for modest incomes, performing a range of physically demanding tasks on a daily basis. I am glad we have been able to provide them with certainty and peace of mind with these employment protections.”

While protecting the jobs of many cleaners, the new contract will move, over the contract term, to a fairer model of delivering cleaning services. This new model is based on the total square metres cleaned and surface types rather than the current approach of fixed hours at different locations.
