Fresh start for old Newcastle Courthouse

The former Newcastle Courthouse at 9 Church Street will be listed for sale from today with a public auction scheduled for 15 December, as part of the NSW Government’s asset recycling strategy.

Proceeds from the sale of the courthouse will be reinvested into NSW Department of Justice initiatives, and the new state-of-the-art Newcastle Courthouse on Hunter Street opened earlier this year will continue to serve the people of the region.

Minister of Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet said the listing gives prospective purchasers the opportunity bring the old courthouse back to life through adaptive re-use whilst also providing funds for Government to reinvest into the community.

“The sale of the old courthouse is a prime example of how the Government’s asset recycling strategy is working to generate essential funding to deliver improved services and build modern facilities for people across the state,” Mr Perrottet said.

Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said the sale of the old courthouse is the final step in a process that delivered world class justice facilities to Newcastle.

“Newcastle’s new seven-storey courthouse has dramatically improved the way court services are delivered in the region and that would not have been possible if we had remained in the old building,” Ms Upton said.

The sale of the courthouse will be accompanied by a Conservation Management Plan, endorsed by the NSW Heritage Council, which contains clear guidelines for prospective purchasers around the type of works permitted on the property.

“The former Newcastle Courthouse was built in the 1890s and tells a unique story in the history of the city, so it’s important that we safeguard its heritage,” Mr Perrottet said.

The historic property is zoned B4 Mixed Use zone under the Newcastle Local Environmental Plan and is likely to attract strong interest given it is located in a prime site on the edge of Newcastle’s CBD.

The old courthouse will be marketed for sale by Colliers.
